Sleep!

Sleep Resources and Advice from CAMHs

Top-tips and main points CAMHs to support good sleep

  • Having a regular time to go to sleep and wake up.
  • Having a predictable and consistent nighttime routine that the children can eventually take ownership of.
  • Making sure children and young people are in natural daylight for at least an hour– particularly in the mornings.
  • Making sure children and young people get enough exercise during the day.
  • Older children should avoid napping in the day, particularly after school.
  • Avoiding caffeine, including the hidden caffeine in chocolate and fizzy drinks, particularly in the late afternoon - this stays in the child's system for up to 10 hours and impacts on the release of the sleepy hormone - Melatonin.
  • Turning off computers and gaming consoles at the mains and other devices at least an hour before bedtime. Blue light from TVs, tablets and mobiles excites the brain and interferes with the release of the sleep hormone - melatonin, just like caffeine - preventing the brain from feeling sleepy. Also, the electricity in the devices can actually interrupt sleep patterns!
  • Having low lighting and a quiet, tidy space in bedrooms.
  • Supporting children and young people to develop positive coping strategies for regulating their emotions and managing their stress levels.
  • Not using the bedroom as a punishment - 'Get to your bedroom!' - Negative associations with this space can cause sleep problems.
  • Avoid making 'staying up late' a reward.
  • Make sleep a priority - for your children and for you. This WILL eventually become routine if you are consistent and remain clam. Stress only heightens emotions which, once again, is counter productive for good quality sleep.
  • Talk to the children about the importance of sleep.
