Geography curriculum statement
Intent
Here at Badsworth C of E Junior and Infant School, it is our intent for everyone to CARE - Prepare - Believe.
As a school we:
Consider And Respect Everyone, as Jesus taught.
Prepare for a bright future.
Believe we can make a difference.
‘I can do all things through Him who strengthens me’
Philippians 4:13
In order for all children to live out our vision, we believe in delivering an engaging, broad and balanced curriculum. Geography is an important part of the children’s learning journey and a key component in holistically developing each learner. Our Geography curriculum promotes and encourages all of our learners to become global citizens who have a curiosity and passion for people and places. Through the teachings of a wide range of skills, knowledge and vocabulary, our students will be equipped with life long competencies that will give them the confidence to positively interact with the wider world.
Badsworth C of E Junior and Infant school will connect with its wider church school partners and community, ensuring that social, moral, spiritual and cultural development is further supported widely across school. We intend to give all children at Badsworth C of E Junior and Infant school a balanced and rich curriculum, whereby they will be immersed in hands-on learning experiences within our locality that help them to understand the physical and human features of the Earth. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, and we seek to inspire children to be inquisitive and ask deep and meaningful questions, and to encourage them to engage in topical discussions and debates where they can confidently express their views.
We live in an ever-evolving world rich with diversity, and geography helps us to explain how day to day life occurs and what this may look like in the future. Children at Badsworth C of E Junior and Infant school will become geographers and learn their place within the world, becoming ambassadors for its ever-changing landscape.
Implementation
Geography at Badsworth C of E Junior and Infant school will contribute to the underpinning and inspiration for the rest of our curriculum, meaning that there is depth within all learning through a cross-curricular approach. Teachers have chosen inspiring and relevant topics that will be taught progressively and build systematically on prior learning; encompassing and embedding other valuable skills such as oracy, reading and critical thinking. Within a geography lesson, children will be exposed to outdoor learning, local fieldwork, theme days, trips and visitors that will spark and ignite their curiousity and overall engagement. This is supported by our Geography scheme, Oddizzi, and is driven by the National Curriculum and our curriculum documents.
Impact
Through practical, deliberate planning and a choice of high-quality engaging texts, children are able to present, contribute ideas respectfully and form valid opinions on the world that we live in, thus improving their overall vocabulary and oracy skills. Children will have a greater understanding of our locality and the context of this within the greater geographical world, and therefore are able to understand and formulate an opinion about wider global issues such as sustainability and global warming. Through our tailored and inspiring curriculum, children will gain an understanding of wider opportunities of geographical speciality skills, meaning they are well prepared for their next steps of education and wider career opportunities in the future.
